When setting up a simple lighting setup for portages there are two lights used.
Key Light (Main Light) This provides the pain lighting source for the subject. It is placed on the photographer's left with it's height just above the subject. The 45 degree angle prevents unflattering shadows apperaing under the chin.
Fill Light This light erases the harsh shadow on the right side of the subject's face that the main light would provide. It adds for a more even and soft lighting effect overall. It should be placed the same height as the camera, to the photographer's right and at a 90 degree angle.
